The most efficient heating system — up to 500% efficient

Ground source heat pumps extract heat stored naturally in the ground and convert it into reliable, low-carbon heating and hot water. With a stable ground temperature of 10–12°C year-round, they deliver outstanding efficiency in all seasons.

The BUS grant applies to ground source heat pumps — £7,500 standard, or £9,000 for oil/LPG off-grid homes from 21 July 2026.

Horizontal trenches or vertical boreholes?

The right type depends on your available land. We assess both during your free survey.

Lower cost

Horizontal ground loops

Pipes in shallow trenches (1.2–2m deep) across your garden. More affordable but requires larger land area — roughly 2–3× your home's floor area. Best for rural properties with open garden space.

Ground source heat pump questions

How much garden space do I need?
For horizontal loops, approximately 2–3× your heated floor area. A 100m² home needs around 200–300m² of accessible garden. Vertical boreholes require only a small access area (typically 2–3m²) for the drilling rig. We assess your site during the free survey.
Does a GSHP qualify for the BUS grant?
Yes — ground source heat pumps fully qualify for the BUS grant. The standard grant is £7,500. Homes heated by oil or LPG can claim £9,000 from 21 July 2026 to March 2027. We apply via HPIN Direct and deduct it from your installation cost.
Will my garden recover after installation?
For horizontal systems, trenches are backfilled and the ground reinstates within 1–2 growing seasons. For borehole installations, the drilling footprint is very small and garden disturbance is minimal.
How does GSHP compare to air source?
Ground source is 20–30% more efficient than air source, operates silently with no outdoor unit, and has a longer lifespan. However it costs more to install and requires suitable land or borehole access. Both qualify for the same BUS grant.
